I had the opportunity to see the musical Hairspray in Grand Island, NE. My nephew, Nathan, and my brother-in-law, Kelly Larsen, both had parts in the high school musical. I went to the the dress rehearsal which allowed me to more easily take pictures. I wasn’t sure how well it was going to work, even with my 70-200mm/2.8 lens on a tripod, but I actually got more good pictures than I expected.

The following is a slideshow of the photos I took. Later I will go through the photos and put the better ones on www.ShetekPhoto.com. For now, enjoy checking out the pictures.

Today and tomorrow are going to be the best days to capture the full moon. This morning I woke to find the moon setting over the lake. It was gorgeous, too bad when it is that gorgeous it is way to dark to even attempt to capture a photo of it. But, I ran down the road to my folks with my camera and tripod and did capture a few photos as the light got brighter as the sun came up. By then the moon is no longer reflecting in the lake so it is really a rather boring shot out here on the plains.

This afternoon I’m wrapping up work in time to drive over to Chandler to get some photos of the sunset and moonrise. I drove over to Sioux Falls yesterday and found a great spot where there are hay bales in the fields and the wind turbines in the background. I was thinking it might make a more interesting shot with the moon than I have captured the last few months. I’ll update this post after I’m done.

Well, this evening didn’t quite turn out like I wanted it to. I headed out plenty early and found a spot that I felt would provide an interesting foreground for the moonrise… and waited, and waited. I was afraid maybe I was a little off on where I thought the moon was coming up and it was coming up behind the farm. But instead, it was actually cloud cover closer to the ground. By the time I could see the moon it was up plenty high in the sky. Not quite the photos I had planned to get. But… it confirmed where the moon was coming up and I’ll try again tomorrow night.

Here’s one of the photos I did get.

Even though I still have plenty to do to get this website looking better I figured I had better start some blogging. I actually started this post at the beginning of September, and here we are at the end of October and I don’t even have it out of draft yet!

Let me give you a little bit of background. I live on the shores of Lake Shetek in southwest Minnesota. My parents live just 6 doors to the North and my older brother’s family is about 1/5 of a mile South of us. My brother Jeff has two boys, Reed (11th grade) and Blake (9th grade). They attend the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton high school in Tracy and they participate in cross country (Blake switched from football to XC this year), basketball, golf, and baseball. When I’m not traveling for business I do my best to get to as many of the games/meets as possible to cheer them on and take photographs.

I post all my sport photographs at www.TMBSports.com in a slideshow format. The better shots are also uploaded to www.ShetekPhoto.com for familys to purchase. I really love following the teams and watching the kids improve during the season as well as year to year.

My younger sister, Tammy, and her family are in Grand Island, NE. Their youngest, Nathan, is still in high school and I plan on getting out there a few times to capture his theather activities. I’ll be heading there next Wednesday to see both him and his day in the school musical “Hairspray.” Will be seeing it at the final dress rehearsal so I’m able to setup a tripod and hopefully get some reasonably good photos. Wish me luck!

My younger brother, Brad, and his family are in Apple Valley, MN. They have three boys who are also heavily involved in sports. Even though they are only 3 hours away, the scheduling is often difficult to get up there to see their sports activities. Several weeks ago I was able to get up to the Cities to see Zach (7th grade) play football and Jacob (3rd grade) play soccer. Hoping to eventually get up there to see a Lacrosse game as I think that would be fun to photograph as well.

As you can tell, there is never a shortage of opportunities for shooting family sporting events!
